Do you ever overcomplicate even the simplest of tasks? If so, you are my kindred spirit.
I have a strong tendency to “overthink”—and let me just say, I actually dislike that term. There’s nothing inherently wrong with analyzing, reflecting, and deeply processing. "Overthinking” is often just another word for deeply caring, being attuned, or having a beautifully complex inner world.
Even now, can you see how I’ve managed to overcomplicate the word overthink?!? Honestly, I could overcomplicate a paper bag—and have! (See: our Stand Strong Sculptures in women’s groups, where we transformed plain brown bags into powerful expressions of our strength.)
Here’s what I know: overexplaining, overpreparing, and overfunctioning are more than habits—they are survival strategies. Particularly for women and marginalized folks, these patterns help us navigate a world that often demands we do more just to be seen as “enough.”
But there are times when life simply demands we let go of what is not serving us and try something different.
